Quit Smoking Using Cold Laser Therapy
Desire: Your first step DESIRE! Desire will increase your motivation and initiative to take that first big step! Desire to quit smoking has to be centered upon you and only you. If you are quitting because someone wants you to quit, let’s go back to step 1.
The Big Step: You have decided you are ready to stop smoking to improve your health, reduce your financial burden, and safeguard those around you from secondhand smoke.
Options Avalible: Community Wellness Center will assist you with several options to help you become a non-smoker if you have been unsuccessful in the past, one being cold laser therapy.
Laser Therapeutics: Low Level Cold Laser Therapy is the easiest and safest way to stop smoking. Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. This form of therapy is now offered to patients at CWC.
Cold Laser therapy is used at CWC much as an Acupuncturist uses needles to promote healing and positive change in a person’s life. By placing the laser on an acupuncture point, a positive change occurs within the person. Sequences of points are activated which promote a sequence of internal changes. These changes may not be immediately felt, as the process is not immediate.
A trained technician who will be able to answer any questions before and during the therapy session will perform the treatment session. The treatment session will be held in a room that is comfortable and relaxing. The technician will explain the process so you will know what to expect during treatment. You'll sit in a comfortable reclining chair. The technician will supply you with safety glasses to wear during treatment. You will experience a sequence of acupuncture points using the laser device. Laser points are located on your face, ear, and arm/wrist/hand. Most individuals become very relaxed during the session and some even fall asleep. This is expected and normal. Once a session has concluded, you're now a non-smoker. You are encouraged to remove all cues that may activate the desire to light up a cigarette. It would be helpful if you would drink a minimum of four bottles of water daily to help with the detox process. The bottled water should not have additives as this may slow down the detox process. The water may also be helpful to use if the desire to smoke occurs. Drinking water instead of lighting a cigarette is a positive change. Most individuals are able to stop smoking after the first session. If the desire is overwhelming and you resume smoking a free follow-up session will be offered. Techniques that may be helpful to stop smoking will be reviewed during the session. Remember, desire, motivation and initiative will see you through the process.
Medical Management
If you continue to have an overwhelming desire to smoke cigarettes, Medical Management may be helpful. Medical management will involve a physical examination, review of medications and review of medical problems. This option is a comprehensive approach that may be utilized to assist with smoking cessation. It will only be offered if laser therapy has been unsuccessful. Medications that may be helpful to promote smoking cessation will be reviewed and prescribed.
Individualized Therapy
This form of intervention may be utilized in combination with medical management. Dynamics of smoking and underlying motivations will be identified with options to reduce conflict. Six sessions will be offered for 30 minutes in length. A cognitive/behavioral therapeutic approach will be utilized during the sessions. Each session will be individual specific.
